Kampong Glam

Kampong Glam

Kampong Glam was one of the first inhabited areas of Singapore and, due to its first tenants, constitutes the Arab quarter of the city. The first streets were named Arab Street, Muscat Street and Baghdag Street, all created at the beginning of century XX.

  • Sultan Mosque: Built in 1924 by Denis Santry, this mosque is the most beautiful and important in Singapore. It can be visited from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.).
  • Sultan's Palace: It was built in 1840 by Sultan Ali, it is located on Kandahar Street and is not very spectacular. In the same street is the Sultan's Gate, a yellow house where the prime minister resided.
  • Bussorah Mall: It is the most beautiful street in the area and where the best restaurants and cafes are located. At its northern end is the Sultan Mosque.
  • Arab Street: Full of fabric, carpet and perfume shops, Arab Street is the most representative street of Kampong Glam.

An interesting area

Although Kampong Glam does not reach the level of Little India or Chinatown, if you have time it is well worth the visit. Walking on North Beach Road is relatively close to Bugis.
